On April 11,  2012, FDA Commissioner Astrue announced at the World Orphan Drug Congress Social Security’s 52 new Compassionate Allowances conditions that qualify for expedited medical decisions, taking the list of conditions from 113 to 165.

The new conditions include many neurological disorders, cancers, and rare diseases.

Compassionate allowances expedite the review and approval process to receive benefits for those diagnosed with the listed conditions.

A list of the allowances can be found here.  More on the FDA’s Compassionate Allowances Program can be found here.
