Austin (11) and Dakota (7)  have Chromosome 15q13.3 Microdeletion. Because of this rare genetic disease, they have Autism, birth defects, cerebral palsy, hearing and vision issues, as well as audio/sensory/visual processing disorders. Dakota also suffers from Epilepsy.

Both children also have Ectodermal Dysplasia, a genetic skin disorder that affects their skin making them prone to MRSA, Impetigo and more. This rare disorder affects their sweat glands; thus, they can not be outside if it is hotter then 71 degrees without their special cooling vest because they do not have the ability to sweat.

Ectodermal Dysplasia also affects the hair making it slow growing, brittle and absent or sparse in areas like their eyebrows. The condition also affects their nails, also making them slow growing and brittle. Another symptom of this disorder causes Austin to be missing both baby and adult teeth.  On the other hand, Dakota has the gap between her front teeth from the phrunum being too thick and long, that usually goes with a cleft palate/cleft lip. Thankfully, she does not have the cleft issues.

Although they both fight this chromosome and skin disorder, Austin and Dakota are strong and brave.  Austin’s nickname is “Iceman,” and Dakota’s nickname is “Stormy” after the X-Men because of their medical conditions.
