What: A “Hike” Fundraiser for the National Fragile X Foundation
When: June 14, 2014, 8 am – 2 pm
Where: Badger Mountain Trail-Head Park
Why: To help family and friends who are affected by Fragile X and to promote community awareness
What is Fragile X Syndrome (FXS)? Fragile X Syndrome is a genetic condition and the leading cause of hereditary intellectual disability worldwide. Most males with FXS have moderate intellectual disability and most females have mild intellectual disability.
Individuals with FXS may also have anxiety, hyperactive behavior, and attention deficit disorder. About one-third of individuals with Fragile X also have features of autism spectrum disorders that can impact communication and social interaction.
You may have never heard of Fragile X…but it is very likely that a friend, family member, employee, coworker or neighbor is impacted. As many as one in 130 women are carries of an expanded Fragile X gene, resulting in a 50 percent chance of having a child with FXS.
As many as one in 3,600 males and 1 in 4,000 females are born with Fragile X Syndrome. Fragile X is an under recognized and under diagnosed contributor to intellectual disabilities all over the world. Over 1,000,000 individuals nationwide have, or are at risk, of developing a Fragile X disorder.
There will be a special Meet & Greet for Families and Friends from 12:00pm – 1:00pm for a chance to get to know others in the area, network, and have a good time!!
