Hallie Bea Barnard is a young girl suffering from Diamond Blackfan Anemia (DBA) and is currently looking for a bone marrow transplant match.
With help from her parents, she created an organization called Hallie’s Heroes to help raise money to fund research, and also educate and advocate for bone marrow donors.
In an effort to serve and protect Hallie’s Heroes mission, police and firefighers from her home town of Fort Worth, as well as the non-profit DKMS, created an awareness video to the tune of Taylor Swift’s “Shake It Off” (see below).
DBA is a rare inherited bone marrow failure syndrome, characterized by a failure of the bone marrow to produce red blood cells. The lack of red blood cells become apparent in the first year of an individual’s life. DBA affects approximately 5 to 7 per million live born infants worldwide. Approximately half of individuals with DBA develop physical abnormalities as well like head size (microcephaly) or broad, flat bridge of the nose.
