Mother Advocating for Her Son with Morquio Syndrome, Snubbed by Commons Speaker, John Bercow

July 15, 2015

A mum whose 6-year-old boy has an ultra-rare disease has slammed Commons Speaker John Bercow after he snubbed her MP’s battle for help.

Katy Brown, whose son Sam has Morquio Syndrome, has penned a furious open letter to Mr Bercow after he ‘rudely’ dismissed Greg Mulholland in a Commons row.

The Lib Dem MP stormed out of the chamber this week in a furious clash with the Speaker after he asked a question about NHS approval of new drugs.

Mr Mulholland’s question wasn’t brief enough and the Speaker, who’d asked MPs to be quick, accused him of being “discourteous” and “long winded”.

As the Lib Dem protested Mr Bercow shouted: “Don’t argue the toss with the chair, Mr Mulholland. Don’t shake your head, mate. I’m telling you what the position is.”

The MP later wrote a furious blog post in which he told the Speaker: “Today you got it wrong”.

Now Ms Brown, who lives in his Leeds North West constituency, has said the argument ‘demonstrated in an instant everything that is wrong with British politics’.

Her letter, published in the Sunday Express, told Mr Bercow: “You wielded your power, the House guffawed and jeered, you used derogatory, mocking language.

“But here’s the blunt truth behind that stopped question. For eight months Mr Mulholland has fought valiantly to represent my family and my son.
