Berylliosis, also known as chronic beryllium disease (CBD), is a rare disease that affects a person’s lungs. Berylliosis is a chronic allergic-type response causing lung disease which occurs when people breathe in beryllium (a chemical). Though people do not intentionally inhale or breathe in the beryllium, factories that use beryllium release it into the air, People in cities surrounding the factories may be affected by berylliosis. The most common factories that use beryllium are ones associated with aerospace and those making fluorescent light bulbs. Symptoms of berylliosis include coughing, shortness of breath, chest pain, and a fever. Talk with your doctor to find the best treatment if you or a loved one has been diagnosed with berylliosis.
