Bone Dysplasia Azouz Type
Type of disease: Rare conditions
Bone Dysplasia - Azouz Type is a form of skeletal disorder characterized by abnormal cell growth in the skeletal system, specifically in the spine. Individuals with this disorder may have various effects on the bones, in particular developing an abnormally flattened spinal column and usually harmless cartilage growth within bone. Bones are important for maintaining the structure of the body and work closely with muscles to enable various movements. Flattening of the spinal column and abnormal cartilage growth can lead to the skeletal system becoming weaker, and thus cause individuals to be less capable of performing important movements, like walking and running. Doctors are usually able to diagnose this defect early, as the resulting symptoms are quickly apparent. Treatment is developed on a case-by-case basis and depends on the specific needs of the patient. For prevention purposes, bone specialists may suggest individuals eat a high-calcium diet, and exercise regularly. If an individual's skeletal problems have progressed, doctors may suggest surgery to fix spine problems.
