Type of disease: Rare conditions
Botulism is a disease caused by the bacteria Clostridium botulinum. There are three main types: infant botulism, foodbourne botulism, and wound botulism. All types are very serious and can be fatal. Each type of botulism has different symptoms, but all include muscle weakness, paralysis, and drooping of the eyes. For all cases, direct contact or ingestion of the bacteria causes the disease. There is an antitoxin available for early prevention of botulism that stops further harm by the infection. For foodborne infections, doctors may induce vomiting and bowel movements to force the bacteria out of your system.
