Hydroa vacciniforme

Overview

Type of disease: Rare conditions

Hydroa vacciniforme, HV causes distinct lesions (scabs or wounds) on the skin. The lesions usually occur on the neck, the face, and the shoulders. There are no known causes of HV at this time, and it usually does not show symptoms until a few years of age. HV mostly affects youth ages three to 15, and after teenage years, the lesions typically happen less often.

HV is not known to cause any other effects besides scarring from the lesions. The severity of the scarring is can change depending on sun exposure and scratching the lesions. Treatment for HV, as well as prevention of worsening symptoms, is to wear high SPF sunscreen, protective clothing, and avoid the sun as much as possible in day-to-day activities.
