Labyrinthitis

Overview

Type of disease: Rare conditions

Labyrinthtis is an inner ear disorder characterized by inflammation or infection of the vestibular system. The vestibular system, housed inside the inner ear, is important for sensing head position and balancing the body. Hence, individuals with this disorder have problems with balancing, and may experience dizziness and tinnitus ("hearing a ringing sound"), and sometimes hearing loss. Doctors diagnose this disease through a thorough physical examination, balance testing, and examination of the ear. Treatment is based on a case-by-case basis and depends on the severity of the disease. Medications are available to alleviate some balance issues. Doctors may suggest patients undergo surgery to fix inner ear problems.
