Lobstein disease

Overview

Type of disease: Rare conditions

Lobstein disease is a group of rare conditions characterized by fragile bones. The conditions are distinguished by what body part they affect and the severity of the symptoms. Individuals with this condition can have bone fractures, deformed bones, blue sclerae, or even hearing loss (broken ear bones). Some of the conditions can cause death at birth or at a very early age. Doctors typically diagnose this disease clinically or based on a history of fracture bones. Treatment is developed on a case-by-case basis and depends on the severity of the condition. Doctors often suggest individuals undergo surgery to fix bone problems. Physical therapists may provide individuals with exercise plans to strengthen their muscles in order to limit the harm done to their bones.
