Precocious puberty

Overview

Type of disease: Rare conditions

Precocious puberty is when a child goes through puberty too soon. Puberty is the physical changes a child goes through when their body is maturing into an adult body capable of reproduction. Precocious puberty is defined as a girl beginning puberty before age 8, and a boy reaching puberty before age 9. Symptoms in girls include breast growth and menstruation, while symptoms in boys include facial hair, deepening voice, and enlarged testicles. Both boys and girls will experience rapid growth, pubic and underarm hair, and acne. The causes of precocious puberty are not entirely known in most cases. In rare cases, tumors, infections, hormone disorders, or brain abnormalities may be the cause of precocious puberty. Treatment may include medications that help delay puberty.
