August 30, 2013

Students at the University of Cincinnati, The Medical University of South Carolina, and Florida State University College of Medicine are just a few of the many school’s using Dr. John Carey’s co-authored text to enlighten and embolden their education on human genetics.

Professor John C. Carey MD, MPH, currently holds the Vice Chair of Academic Affairs in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Utah. Dr. Carey graduated from Villanova University in 1968 with an A.B. and received his M.D. from Georgetown University school of medicine in 1972.

His interest in birth defect syndromes and of the care of children with these afflictions led him to work in pediatrics. His focus has mainly been on congenital malformation, neurofibromatosis and syndrome delineation. His studies of genetics and dysmorphology were the focus of his work from 1972-1979 at the university of California San Francisco during his residency—in between which he earned his M.P.H. from the University of California, Berkley in 1976.

In 1985, after becoming the Chief of the Division of Medical Genetics he remained there until 1999, when he left to become the Editor-in-Chief of the American Journal of Medical Genetics, a position he’s held since 2001. Dr. Carey has served as medical adviser and “founding professional” for the Support Organization for Trisomy 18, 13 and Related Disorders (SOFT) since 1980.

Families have flocked to Dr. Carey for treatment–as well as support and understanding.

“We knew we had found hope and love for our son,” says patient-parent, Pat Farmer. “There are not enough words to describe Dr. Carey.  He is without a doubt – the very BEST caretaker we ever found for Joey. He is well deserving of this wonderful recognition.”

The medical and ethical aspects of care of infants and children with these conditions are currently some of his major academic interests.
