Miller Resigns from Abeona

January 9, 2020

Tim Miller, co-founder, president, and chief scientific officer of Abeona Therapeutics is resigning from the company.

The gene and cell therapy developer did not issue a press release, but disclosed it in a terse filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission that Miller would resign effective January 10. FierceBiotech first reported on Miller’s resignation after he posted about it to LinkedIn.

“Ok…. this is one of those hard posts. Today we announced my resignation from Abeona, the company I founded almost 7 years ago,” he wrote. “It’s been a tremendous, wondrous, inspiring journey allowing me to bring together a passion and vision of new gene therapies for rare disease families. There’s no easy way to express my gratitude and steadfast support for all of the warriors that passionately work for these families. I am thankful for the colleagues I’ve shared tears and joy with, as new milestones have been accomplished in the fight.”

Miller’s resignation comes after a period of turmoil in the executive offices. Miller had moved from serving as the founding CEO to chief scientific officer in April 2018 when the company appointed Carsten Theil as CEO. Theil had served as chief commercial officer of Alexion. But in November of that year the board terminated Theil due to “personal misconduct” that violated that company’s code of business conducts and ethics. The company’s chief medical officer João Siffert was named to replace him.
