Session: Genomic Medicine – Navigating Between the Head and the Heart

Charles Steward has spent 27 years working on the human genome. As Patient Advocacy and Engagement lead at genomic analysis firm, Congenica, in the UK, he is passionate about the impact that patient advocacy and engagement and genomics can have in bringing about positive change for patients and their families. He also has two young children with severe cerebral palsy, one of whom had West syndrome epilepsy at 8 months, and genome sequencing of his family has not yet found an explanation for their challenges. Charles is involved with studies to investigate the significant genomic drivers behind cerebral palsy and preterm birth, disorders that are still considered by many to be accidents at birth.
