Child with MLD Given New Hope by MLD Foundation, Angel View and Riverside County Housing Authority

August 15, 2014

What a remarkable turnaround for Reyna Melgar and her 3-year-old son, Josué Candelario, who suffers from MLD, a rare degenerative neurological disease.

A few months ago, she was in a dilapidated, fly-infested trailer with limited medical supplies and little help. Today, thanks to nonprofit groups the MLD Foundation and Angel View, along with the Riverside County Housing Authority and several caring individuals, she and her family are in an air-conditioned double-wide trailer in Thermal. A nurse cares for Josué eight hours a day.

There is no cure for MLD, or metachromatic leukodystrophy. Josué has lost the ability to sit up, stand or talk. But he smiles and his eyes light up when his mother talks to him.

“He looks better to me,” she said.
