Book-A-Thon in Williamson County to Raise Funds Benefiting Charcot-Marie-Tooth Association

This summer kids in Williamson County will be able to read books to friends and family in the Charcot-Marie-Tooth Association’s Summer Book-A-Thon to benefit those with this rare disease.

CMT is a progressive nerve disease similar to Multiply Sclerosis. It affects about 2.8 million people, causing them to lose normal use of their hands, arms, feet and legs. There is no way to predict how far the disease will progress, and there is a wide rang of severities and types across the CMT population.

One local family, the Miles, have a cousin, ten-year-old Grayson, in Kentucky with the disease. Grayson was diagnosed about six years ago, and tragically he and his twin sister lost their mother to cancer last June. When the Miles children knew their mom, Stefanie Rose, was doing a Kentucky Derby Party in memory of their aunt, benefiting CMTA, they decided they wanted to raise money for Grayson’s disease too.

CMTA jumped on board with the idea to pilot a program in Williamson County this summer, with the intention of implementing the Book-A-Thon nationally across the CMTA branches.

The program is open to any pre-kindergarten and elementary student living in Williamson County, and kids will ask adults and family to sponsor them for anywhere between a quarter and a dollar per book. There will be weekly prizes and overall prizes to be won at the end as well.

Registration begins May 9 and is free. The four-week reading program begins Sunday, June 26. At the end of the program there is a week to collect pledges or flat donations before Williamson County Schools begin classes.
