Royal Pains Turns Focus Towards Rare Disease in New Season, Starting June 2nd

June 2, 2015

When the writer’s room at USA Network began to discuss the upcoming season of Royal Pains, they knew what they needed to do. If, as mentioned by the austere and mysterious character Boris (the diseased and connected billionaire) they were going to pursue the idea of opening a clinic for rare diseases—well, they needed to make sure these cases were believable.

And that’s just when the office phone at the Southern California headquarters of Global Genes began to ring.

Producers reached out to the team at Global Genes as they are one of the leading rare disease patient advocacy organizations in the world. The non-profit promotes the needs of the rare disease community. Their mission is to eliminate the challenges of rare disease which affect 1 in every 10 Americans, 30 million individuals in the United States and 350 million people globally. Approximately 80 percent of these diseases are caused by faulty genes. The National Institutes of Health Estimates that 50% of people affected by rare disease are children. Making rare disease one of the most deadly and debilitating for children worldwide. Needless to say, there were many stories to be told.

Together, the team at Global Genes worked with writers to go over some of the over 7,000 known and classified rare diseases.

“We’re overwhelmed with gratitude with Royal Pains for bringing mainstream awareness to rare disease,” said Global Genes, President and Founder, Nicole Boice. “Helping patients to recognize symptoms and advocate for their best chance at treatment is one of our main goals.”

The new season of Royal Pains (USA link) begins June 2nd, and patients wanting to learn more about the strange and uncommon diseases mentioned in the show can get a sneak peek by checking out Global Gene’s growing list of rare diseases.
