Rare Disease South Africa Offers Port Training Opportunity

June 15, 2017

Rare Diseases South Africa, in partnership with B Braun Medical, has developed a port access training program for patients, caregivers and nursing professionals.

Following a patient survey, the following key findings were established:
• There are close to 70% of individuals that require long-term IV treatment, of which 42,8% do not know or vaguely know what a portocath is.
• Vast majority do not use a portocath.
• Just under half of the respondents using a portocath have had an infection.
• Almost all respondents (just under 90%) have not had formal training, yet over 70% would like to be trained.

This confirmed the need for us to continue with development of a training programme.
Key training objectives:
All delegates will walk away from this program with the following:

1) Know what a port looks like and how it functions.
2) Have an understanding of how ports are surgically inserted.
3) Understand the associated risks of having a port.
4) Have an understanding on the necessitate of sterility with practical training.
5) Have an understanding of the various types of ports, the associated needles and consumables, as well as how they work.
6) Have an understanding of port access and how it is carried out appropriately, with practical training.
