Man with Retinitis Pigmentosa (Usher Syndrome) Inspires Others with CrossFit

A man in Luling is working to make a difference by shedding light on a rare disease and inspiring those around him to keep fighting when the going gets tough.

Now, imagine working out without being able to hear. Now imagine your vision slowly closing in.

That’s the reality for people with retinitis pigmentosa — Usher Syndrome.

For Derrick Francis, something that would stop many people in their tracks is the same thing that drives him to inspire, motivate and reach out to others like him.

Francis founded A Class of Our Own to help those suffering from Usher Syndrome and the family members and friends who give support.

It’s not just the people living with Usher that Francis has an effect on. Francis’ drive inspires everyone around him.

Raymond Guidry, owner of River Parish CrossFit uses Francis as an example and motivation to his clients, saying, “He’s a perfect example of ‘If you just want to succeed, if you have the drive and the desire to go out and be successful, then you’ll find a way to do it.'”

And day in and day out, Francis aims to make a difference by practicing what he preaches.
