Football to Host Uplifting Athletes TD Pledge Drive vs. Texas

December 29, 2015

The Baylor University Chapter of Uplifting Athletes is hoping to turn touchdowns into rare disease research money by holding a Touchdown Pledge Drive during the Texas game on Saturday, Dec. 5, at 11 a.m. CT at McLane Stadium. The event is a signature fundraiser of the Uplifting Athletes nationwide network of 25 college football chapters led by student-athletes.

For the Texas game, each touchdown the Bears score will support Cerebral palsy research. Fans can support the Touchdown Pledge Drive by making a donation through the Bears’ pledge site: pledgeit.org/baylor2015. When at the site, fans can choose an amount of money to pledge for each touchdown Baylor scores in the game.

The drive will be the Bears’ fourth event with Uplifting Athletes as they’ve raised over $20,000 by holding a Lift For Life event on July 17, 2014 and July 16, 2015, and TD Pledge Drive last season against Kansas on Nov. 1, 2014, in a 60-14 win.

After being a work in progress for nearly a year, Baylor’s Chapter was started in large part by former receiver Levi Norwood in the summer of 2013. Norwood decided to take on a three-year relationship with Jacoby Burks, who has Cerebral palsy. Burks is scheduled to be at the Texas game to watch the team. With Norwood’s graduation, the title of Baylor Chapter President has been handed over to junior defensive end and Waco native Andrew Billings.

By forming an Uplifting Athletes chapter at Baylor, the football student-athletes on the team are not only supporting their chosen rare disease but are also part of the entire rare disease community support network.

Uplifting Athletes is a national non-profit organization aligning college football with rare diseases and raising them as a national priority through outreach, research, education and advocacy. Each of the 25 student-athlete led chapters nationwide raises research funds and brings awareness to their chosen rare disease through a Lift For Life fundraiser.

This season Uplifting Athletes has teamed up with Pldgit, a performance-based fundraising software company, to give each chapter the opportunity to hold a Touchdown Pledge Drive. Holding an in-season fundraiser gives each Uplifting Athletes Chapter the opportunity to expose its mission and purpose to a larger audience.
