Lung agenesis

Overview

Type of disease: Rare conditions

Lung agenesis is a rare disease. Individuals with this disease are born without a lung or a bronchus. Bronchi are the air passages of the lungs. Individuals with this disease will usually have trouble breathing. About 1 in 15,000 children are born with lung agenesis. It is common for individuals with this disease to have heart, muscle, bone, urinary, or intestinal problems. The cause of Lung Agenesis is currently unknown but it is thought to have a genetic component. Some adults do not know they have the disease while some children may die shortly after birth. There is no cure for the disease. An X-ray will show a doctor if an individual has the disease. Severity depends on what part of the lung is missing or malformed. Always speak with your doctor about the best personal plan of action.
